The Victorian period gets its name from England's Queen Victoria, who at eighteen was crowned in 1837. The queen was the leading influence on jewelry styles for the next sixty years. It became fashionable to wear several necklaces at once and to wear chokers high on the neck. The jewelry of the period is characterized by light, open work using several techniques of filigree, piercing, cannetille and repoussé. Many pieces were fabricated from thin sheets of gold that were chased and engraved. Condition is good. Containing: 55 seed pearls, The pearls are cream in color, off-round, lightly spotted with good uniformity Graded in the setting. A seed pearl is a small natural pearl, formed in either a saltwater oyster or fresh water mussel, that is usually less the a one-quarter grain in weight and smaller then 2mm in size and off-round in shape. In jewelry they were used as decorative borders, tiny accents in small patterns or in larger clusters woven together to make up an entire piece of jewelry. One of the most historically famous examples of seed pearl jewelry is that of a seed pearl suite (a necklace and two matching bracelets) purchased on April 28, 1862 from Tiffany and Co. for Mary Todd Lincoln from President Abraham Lincoln to wear to the first Lincoln inaugural ball.
